Star and Bucwild can kiss my ass

Given the reports from Stan (with updates) and Jay, it seems like my fears are confirmed: Some parts of the hip hop community feel that Indians are good enough to steal beats from, but not good enough to treat with respect. Two of the most popular shock jocks on the air on east coast hip-hop stations have been trying to get by despite their racist and misogynistic rantings being played for comedy.

Ordinarily, I post my music-related stuff on Pop Life, but this one seems more of a general cultural issue. Naturally, they didn't really get punished at all, despite working for Clear Channel, which is supposed to have a "zero tolerance" (read: zero freedom) policy for offensive behavior. The employee who posted the clip got punished, in a classic big company "shoot the messenger" kind of idiocy.

Now, to be clear, I'm all for people saying offensive things on the air, really, but I'm not for people disrespecting Indian folks in the same way that the creators of hip hop culture were disrespected. Want to say something offensive? Fine, just be funny. And I suspect that Clear Channel would have had a lot more to say about it if almost any other ethnic group were offended. Instead, this dimwitted duo is being promoted, having their show relaunched in the New York market.

Finally, the radio station's spokeswoman said, "Most of the e-mails came from people who do not listen to Power 99, whose audience is mainly African American". I know very few people who grew up in the Indian community in the United States who aren't hip hop fans, so regardless of what this woman thinks, her audience isn't that homogenous. And somehow, I suspect that the African American community might have some awareness of what it's like to have one's racial background as a basis for being denigrated, demeaned, and mocked, especially in a manner that's abusive towards women.

  1. the call wasn’t funny.

  2. you’re giving Star and Bucwild too much credit…it may have actually been the show’s producer who came up with the idea and who was subsequently fired as a result. morning show bits are often a very behind-the-scenes affair with several contributors. the DJs are just the public face of the show.

  3. everything in time. if you say “treat with respect” and mean “Punjabi MC gets as much airplay as Jay-Z without Jay-Z on the track”, remember that it took 15+ years before eminem made white boys that rap a component of mainstream hip hop. hip hop has been around for 25+ years and we’re just now seeing latinos and puerto ricans get mainstream exposure with some of the reggaeton records that are bubbling.

i don’t know if Bappi Lahiri suing Truth Hurts and Rakim for the sample contained in “Addictive” is constructive or not. but i do know that hip hop artists performing in Hindi or Punjabi would do well, from a mainstream standpoint, to seek collaboration from mainstream hip hop artists who are looking for a fresh sound.

One of the things I have long noted is that many, many black people really don’t know how to deal with it when you call them out for racist attitudes. White people are extremely defensive about it, mostly, to the point where they can laugh at comedians whose audiences are predominantly white making jokes about blacks, but they can’t make those same jokes or remarks themselves and not be instantly scorned. The funny part is, white people will savage their own—hillbillies, rednecks, whatever you call them, who are really nothing but rural and suburban poor people for the most part.

I think the black community is going to be increasingly challenged on things like this, and it’s a good thing. If the goal is racial harmony, then it has to go in all directions. I have heard black friends say the most scandalously racist things about Jews, about Arabs, about Indians, and (yes) even white Europeans, and no one calls them on it at all.

To an extent this was tolerable when the vast majority were poor, just as I have a much harder time looking at a white kid who grew up in the projects or in a shack in the styx and being truly furious with him for expressing racist sentiments. I can argue with him, or try to gently point out the error of his ways, but unless he’s in a position of power over others, it’s hard for me to muster outrage—sadness is the usual response I have to any of it.

Still: there is no excuse for a well-paid, middle class, well-educated black person to have the kinds of attitudes toward other ethnic groups that we don’t expect from any other well-paid, middle class, well educated person. It hadn’t really occurred to me until you posted this, Anil, that Indians were a group that got a lot of that, but that’s probably mostly because I dont listen to shock jocks and I live in an area (Detroit) which has very few Indians in it. The kicked-around ethnic group around here is mostly Arabs.

Not to even begin to try to make excuses for Star & Buckwild, but they are notoriously ignorant which I suppose the reason they’re on Clear Channel to begin with (example: playing the sound of a plan crash after the death of Aaliyah)

While it’s offensive and just plain old stupid - I think you have to have faith that people are not as dumb as Star & Buckwild and that they can discern intelligence from prejudice.

You are really a sell out and a prostitute of society. The Willie Lynch policies affected African Americans in several different ways, and it really is very apparent in you. The Starr and Buckwild show is on air because its brash, hard-hitting commentary. I am the first to say that I have been appalled by a lot of the issues about black women. I think Starr generalizes too much when it comes to women, especially black women. His radio show just started being aired in virginia and we are not used to hearing the type of language on air (especially at 6:00 am). I no longer listen to the morning show in my car with my son, I am afraid the b#@*h word will just fly out. Some of his and his co-hosts’ comments are unsensitive and not well thought out. BUT…I was listening the morning of April 26th, when they were reading “Hater Email Advise” and he advised a lady on a situation about her niece and her absent drug-addicted father. Starr’s advise was right on the money. Every once in a while he will say something thought provoking and kind and educated. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and Starr and Buckwild are vanguards of the 1st amendment right to speak our minds. So despite some of their off-colored commentary, it takes people like them to make US as a people to wake up and get into a dialogue. Thank You

Indians are funny people man. First of all Indians are the biggest under-cover racists in the U.S. And I learned that first hand in 2004 when A friend of mine invited me to his house, only to take that invite back. Now, I later found out that his parents and most Indians in this country cannot stand blacks. They kiss up to white people like dogs, and those same people laugh behind their backs. It’s hillarious. And it kills me that Indians don’t like blacks, but try so hard to fit in to our culture(clothing, music, slang, etc.) Ya’ll really need to be easy. As far as Star’s comments, I look at it as an eye for an eye. Indians talk the same way about blacks behind closed doors. And keep to your own culture instead of trying to be like us and at the sametime being disgusted by us when we are around you.

People don’t want to give a black man credit for anything. Star and Buc Wild are strong black role models who aren’t afraid to let everyone know what the black community is thinking. It’s an attack on our freedom of speech, and they’re taking away our voice, because they don’t care about black people. In case you’ve forgotten, African-Americans have made a number of important contributions to society that go unappreciated: like peanut butter, the traffic light, and even the supersoaker, not to mention the numerous advancements we have made in the fields of music, basketball, and fashion.

I could go on and on about this issue, but at the end of the day, I think Star summed it up it best when he said: “I would like to tinkle on her. Call the cops? Nigga, please, there’s no bodyguards. I carry the 9. Most of the cats that are with me, have felony convictions, they can’t carry. I’m disrespectin’ your seed. I would like to skeet on the face of your seed.”

All your Star haters need to get lives. You complain about everything he say’s or does, but are sitting by your radio’s everyday listening. That’s that BS type stuff, like Star always said if you don’t like it go down the dial where you can hear the same 7-8 songs over and over and over again. When a man of color says something of substance and knowledge there are always people ready to quiet him. Now if that weird white man “Coward Stern” would have said the things Star said he “may” have been suspended or fined and that’s it, but let a man of color say it and he gets fired. Yo Star, ain’t nothing like guaranteed money huh!! Hope to hear you back on the air waves soon.

Using the vocabulary of someone who’s intelligent doesn’t make one intelligent. He’s ignorant, prejudiced, and moronic. His theories are backwards, and his rants are senseless. And to the couple of black people who posted that Indians are racist, guess what you’ve exposed yourself as the racist one. Unless you’ve met all the billions of Indians and have known them long you can’t possibly make such an overwhelming generalization without just exposing your self as the idiot you are. Funny how a plane crashing got him justifiably fired when a black person died, but people who find similar instances of senseless prejudice directed at them are suddenly the ones who are wrong.

Now I think Star crossed the line including Envy’s child but I have to question the why is everybody calling him a racist when whites make fun of South Asians and Chinese, there is never an outrage. Another thing, as far as the original post, rappers mostly sample from BLACK artists from the ‘70’s not from Punjabi artists. Stop acting like we have no history.

Please get off the brothers they do have their faults but these two are not. People tend to get up roun-up on racist statement not understanding we all are racist in some form or another. Star should get what he deserve and learn to respect other regardless of their ethnicity. We all have something to say about the Black man and how they come out their face..it is not just the black men it is all men of all cultures that say things that are disrespectful to other.. we as a nation should respect everyone. I read this and I was very upset with the stereotype on black men.

Adults can always be fair game when it comes to self expression, but when that extends to violating a child (physically or verbally) it crosses the line on many levels. Usually it just takes time for people to show their true colors. Maybe he is actually harboring these feelings for children-he needs help.

I don’t even think Star would consider his radio personality to be a role model. You do realize that’s what they are? Radio Personalities? I have to take the time to state that anyone who even considered that a self-made millionaire would go on a nationally sydicated radio show and attempt to make real threats against a four year old are just as ignorant as the people who fired Star for doing his job! If Star were intending to actually do harm to that child or her mother i have to think that Star is smart enough to be discreet. We all listen to his show because he pushes the envelope and says things that we may speak but never say out loud to others. As a native New Yorker i can only say that the only intelligent radio show on a hip-hop station is over! Why wasn’t the community up in arms when Ms. Jones had all those stupid Jesus jokes on air or her slap-stick, black-face, talk like a slave jokes? The reality is Star was hired for doing exactly what he did last Wednesday. Did he go too far, maybe? Was he offensive, absolutely! However, i believe a suspension would have sufficed. The black community should be enraged that another successful brother is being made a target by the same people who made him successful. Star says racial epithets every single day on his show, and Wednesday was no different. We can’t be offended that he speaks about the Asians on one day, but never mention a word when his co-host is named White Trash Helene and his producer is nicknamed Spic!!! I think we all need to use our common sense, if something offends you turn off your T.V., radio, computer whatever it is and live your life. Star there are still some people hear that believe in you and your vision!

After reading some of the comments here, I have to say that, as a black man, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING THAT GOES ON IN OUR COMMUNITY!!! I do not have to burden myself with the weight of an entire race because people think I should be what they want me to be. And if you think every black man or woman lives up to the sterotypes just because you refuse to see anything else, or because you think everyone should be obligated to what you believe, or you’re so narrow minded that what you see and hear you think is all reality, then you’re just as stupid and predujice as the comments we’re talking about. Whether you’re black, white, asian, latino, men, women, or any other. You all play the same game called hate and prejudice everyday. You just bullshitted yourself to think that only you is right. But I, as a black man, don’t have to subscribe to what you like. I, as a black man, don’t have to follow you. And I, as a black man, got my own fucking problems, which most don’t care about because they’re not their problems. And I, as a black man, don’t have to listen or deal with anyone unless I WANT TO!! AND I DON’T NEED TO EXPLAIN SHIT TO ANYBODY!! Furthermore, everyone here at one point said or thought or believe some stupid shit. And most likely, still do at great levels. You just think you’re being insightful and honest. But its still prejudice. So before you get ready to throw stones, go plunk yourself in the head a few times. If you took it seriously, then you’re not mad because he said it. You’re afraid because he said what you thought.

You guys do not have your facts stright Black people love to hollar racism as a crutch, in this case.. you selected few on this board are saying if this was Howard he would have just gotten suspended. Well after he made those comments on the air clear channel DID suspend him and had no intention on firing him. Read below

Soon after, City Councilman John Liu and Gia Casey, Envy’s wife, organized a press conference and demanded Star’s termination. After initially only suspending him, Power 105 later released a statement announcing that Star was no longer with the station.

While I’m glad that Star has finally been fired, I’m still annoyed (surprise!). First, the station had no intention of firing Star until other people stepped in and threatened them, proving that the station has no conscience, only interests. Also, why are people so up in arms about this comment (which they should be), but relatively silent about his attacks against women, gays, lesbians, civil rights leaders, asians, latinos, disabled people, overweight people, and dead people? Lastly, if threatening to “do an R. Kelly” on someone’s abuse kids is so over-the-top, why do they still play the music of R. Kelly, who actually follows through on such threats?

Well that is your opinion. Look at Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern known for spiting racial slurs. But nobody has not mentioned anything about them and they are still running amuck. Star and Buc did what they were paid to do, and that was cause big rating any means necessary. For 17 million dollars I would say anything and everything that comes to mind. You so-called good black christians(Phillymadnez) are hyprocrites, jackasses. You talk about they are doing wrong for the community, when the last time you helped your community?? God is Lord, Jesus is your savior, get it right dunny. I support Star and Buc eventhough what they did was messed up and inapproiate during that time, but suing the man and Clear Channel will not help. Then it would be Envy’s job on the line if his wife wants to sue Clear Channel. The councilman wants CC to donate 5 mil to some dead kids foundation that was RAPED, but Star did not approach nor had any intention to do anything like that, he is not stupid. You call it sell-out radio, but everyday you worry about who sells-out instead of getting ahead and taking care of your kids. Stop worrying about who does this and who does that, just worry about your life and how you live it. Most of you niggas watch BET and let your kids act up in school with no discipline. Who are you to say that you know what’s best for the community. The same community that you represent sells drugs and rapes children and all kinds of crazy stuff but you are too afraid to help your community because you live by the code of stop snitching. I though you christians believe in laying down your life for the better cause of saving lives and ending terror. Did God preach that in his own words. No Star is not a role model for children, so aren’t you. Childern look up to rappers, athletes, entertainers, dumb thug niggas as inspiration. I like the Star and Buc Wild and I will continue to listen to it because they spit the truth eventhough they step on toes to do it. Lets not leave the so-called innocent out of this. I know Envy, and he’s been know to say some threating stuff to Star because Star is whippin his butt in ratings, also making more money that Envy, so of course niggas will be jealous of the situation and his wifey was lookin elsewhere to get pleased. Now That’s a FACT…

I don’t know why everybody is talking so much shit about the things Star said, because the reason he was so successful and had such high ratings is that people could not wait to hear what was going to come out of his mouth next. He said out loud what almost EVERYONE wanted to say but don’t have the balls to say. How many times have I walked in on someone talking about somebody else. Oh she’s so fat, he’s so damn ugly, she swear she’s the bomb, etc. Now that’s someone’s saying these things on the air it’s a big deal right? As you could guess by my comment on May 12, I am a Star and BucWild supporter. Now all you Star haters got Big Tigger and Egypt, a bubble gum morning show. With respect to them, they are not a morning show they say nothing of substance, they are better suited as a late morning early afternoon show or just keep them once a week. And it seems that is the case, because they are not on anymore, they lasted a good 10 days, and now they have this silly morning host “Big Boy” of Big Boy’s Neighborhood. I give them about 10 days as well. I listened this morning for about 2 hours, trying to give them a chance, but that was all I could take, before I turned it off and listened to cd’s. When will Clear Channel wake up and get Star back on the air, if Star would even go back to them. The ratings must be in the basement if they only gave Big Tigger a couple weeks. Replacing Star with Big Tigger and Egypt was like going from “Gangster Rap to Will Smith”, and putting Big Boy on is an even bigger mistake.

Star and Crossover was some of the best radio ever. Crossover’s stumbling ghetto infused republicanism was such great foil for Star’s seamless pragmatism. It is a cyring shame he was thrown off the air. They could have suspended him for a week, by firing him, Clear Channel just cuts off it’s own nose to spite it’s face. Star tells it like it is “straight with no chaser”, I truly hope he shows up again soon.

It is amazing how we, as African-Americans, forget how short a time it has been since the emancipation proclamation. Star & Buckwild represent a segment of our people that are chained to the past through ignorance of self, jaded by refusal to purify the heart, resentful of meditation, and totally at a loss of how to realize the identity of the self and its relationship to a Greater Power. After disrespecting another person in that manner, being fired should be coupled with being sued, prosecuted, jailed, tarred and feathered.

I listened to Star on a daily basis. I love his strength, I adored the way he came at situations from a different perspective. You eithered listened to him and enjoyed his show or you could of just turned the damn station. Star is his on man, it’s wrong to make him “the represenative” for all black men. He is who he is. I do agree that he took his words and thoughts too far this time. He was punished correctly.I magine if it was any one your children that he was talking about, you would want him to be fired. He has to learn where to draw the line. Being a man includes being a gentleman. Hopefuuly, when I hear star on the radio again (cause I do like him) he would of changed his habits by then.

This is sad! Not only that, but embarrassing. First off, let’s get to the root of the whole ordeal — MONEY! That’s right, MONEY. We are so backwards in our thinking, in our speaking and in our actions that it’s not even funny. We applaud what is lewd, rude, crude and sinful. If we can make money at it, we will defend it at any cost. Regardless if we have to disrespect our own brothers and sisters or ourselves in the process. All for the love of money. But as surely as you were born, you will surely die. You can’t take it with you, since it will have no use where you will be going. In this world, we believe that as long as we have lots of money, we can do and say what we want and treat people how we want to. But you will have to answer for that. We frown upon respect, integrity, kindness, sincerity (should I go on?). I don’t care what other races think of my race (African-American), since they cannot get me into heaven. We all will be held accountable for our actions. And YES, we all will be held accountable for our condoning of sin.

How do you think God feels about Star’s comments, about Envy’s comments? You can’t honestly think He’s pleased. His intention for our creation was not for us to act like fools and act as if we do not have the good and common knowledge He has given us. To support such crazy comments proves that we are still way off from where we should be in life. But, while you are using fowl language and citing the 1st amendment, remember that you too have loved ones, and just put yourself in that situation. Then come back here and tell us how you feel after some one threatened to do such devilish acts on someone you love and care about? It’s sad that we (minorities) feel we have to become enemies just because we work in the same line of business. Talk about STUPIDITY. Star’s firing was justifiable. Envy’s discipline was justifiable. Do yourselves a favor and read what the Bible says about “false prophets.” If we all had true understanding of what the Word of God says, we would not be supporting these FALSE PROPHETS. Wake up people of all nations. The enemy is taking the throne.

Uneke Uneke Uneke…I totally agree with you. But Star and Bucwild crews were not prophets Therefore they cannot be classified as false prophets. Star and Bucwild has not done worst then Howard Stern… and many others. they just become the scapegoat. Freedom of speech and freedom of expression is what our demecrocy is based upon. By firing them makes it even worst because There was no crime committed just.

this goes out to all you cock suckers and alledged scum bags, who’s becoming a pain in the ass to the star and bucwild revolution. you two-faced bastards always trying to so-call scorn or persecute star for speaking his mind and addressing issues, that you and i know are true and agreeable. these adversaries and dictators are just jealous of a man of color who points out true actual facts of all ethnicitys and the cruel debauchery’s of society. so what if star comment are inappopriate and insensative to listeners who are offeded and cant stomach his view, you have the right to tune him out just as he has the right to tune in to does who want to hear him out…(P.S.THE LISTENERS WILL NOT BE DENIED)

people always try to change the things that matter the least. the biggest racists reside in the white house, congress, supreme court, house of representitives, governers mansion and city hall. no matter what racist stuff the say they still get to keep their jobs. clinton almost got impeached for a (blowjob)lieing under oath. bush has lied to us his whole presidency, involved us in a bogus war killed countless people in lousiana yet we praise him. my point being maybe what comes out of star and bucwilds mouth isnt really that important.
