The Best Subway Stops in the World

This fantastic series of photos of subway stations really makes me appreciate mass transit in a way that I haven't in ages. Look at Stockholm!

Any space where people spend a significant amount of time waiting every day should be beautiful. It seems like that's something people agree on, regardless of what culture they're from. Thanks to Byrne for the link.

I deserve none of the credit. /\/\/\/ should get it all.

I’m glad they included Moscow and Saint Petersburg on there. They have truly fantastic Metro systems which we were pleased to be able to see in person earlier this year. I was a bit skittish about taking photos of Russian Metro stations, so the only photo I actually have to show for it is this

Somehow I find it hilarious yet ironic how for New York they have a picture of the wall.

Hmm, not a single San Francisco Bay Area station. I wish we had even a single station that was a good piece of architecture. I’d even settle for a subway station that was functional with good information signs…

Le sigh

Over the next decade the San Francisco Municipal Railway plans to build four entirely new subway stations, but I doubt they will do anything beyond the absolute minimum they can get away with. Caltrain will build two and I’m sure they will be functional and well laid out, but doubt they will be world class stations.

Some of our stations have as many as a quarter million people pass through every day, but none hold a candle to some of the architecture we have above ground in San Francisco.

How do I start a campaign to for a subway station makeover?
