Zidane World Cup Headbutt Animation Festival

Zinedine Zidane's savage headbutt of Marco Materazzi in the World Cup final has touched on many things: Race, family, country, terrorism, sportsmanship. But more than anything else, it's united the entire Internet around the most important thing. Wacky animations!

In light of this historic moment, and thanks to the efforts of citizens of MetaFilter, Something Awful, b3ta, and other online communities, I sifted through dozens of the best/worst Zidane-related animations online. All this to bring you the following movie I made last night, dedicated to the head-first fight against alleged racism, the grand tradition of ridiculous memes on the net, and the premise that "Yakety Sax" is always funny.

Feel free to leave your own animated .gifs inline in the comments; If you aren't signed in, I'll have to approve your comments before they appear.

Update: This little movie's turned out to be pretty popular! It's been featured in the Time Shares Exhibition at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City, as well as the Avant Gaming Exhibition at the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University.

That’s great entertainment!!

Although i’m curios as to what Matterazzi said to him to make him explode like that.

Zindane reckons it would have serious repercussions if he revealed what he said.

Come on ZZ put us out of our misery.

I admire Zidane for being so brave and strong to act like this. That way he brought attention of all world to verbal abuse he was exposed in the most important moment in the game. There are speculations of all kinds in the game but verbal abuse is so profoundly hidden but it hurts as same as somebody slapped your face. He was provoked and he did right thing. If you debate, use verbal games, if you play soccer ( particular on the world cup ) it would be fair to use a ball or a leg instead dirty words. That was unethical and low provocation. I think , after this any player in any game will think twice before provocation verbally the opposite team member. Zidane did the change, brought attention and send the right message to all players who use this type of provocation. He was enough smart to now the consequences of his action, but in spite of everything he didn’t let it go. He was protecting his dignity and members of his family. What a character. You really have to be brave to do that.

My all admiration to Zidane

I think that often in soccer game, the players injuries other players. You can see it every day. Some time there is a bad reaction (when a player is more violent than another…). This is what zizou has done! An exagerated reaction. I’m sad because he mustn’t react in this way. :-( He demonstrate to the world to be a violent person. :-( Very sad…

The big question was What happened to Zidane?

Why did he assault the Italian midfielder in a final at a crucial juncture in the last match of his career?

The first reactions were all against Zinedine -putting the blame of the world cup loss on his shoulders. The world scolded and admonished him for behaving in a rowdy manner and tarnishing a long illustrous career. It was foolish,an act of frustration, suicidal, and unsportsmanlike.

Stop it.!!!

Before you say anything ,listen to the other side of the story.A story that could move you to tears.A story of an Algerian boy who lived on the streets of France.Orphaned at a very young age Zinedine and his brothers and sisters ( a large family) was living from hand to mouth.

To battle hunger and starvation, his eldest sister made the gratest sacrifice a woman could make. She took up prostitution. She earned money for her brothers and sisters and brought them up .At least now they could have food to eat ,clothes to wear and a roof over their heads.

Algerians are treated as badly in France as negroes were once treated in the western world.Suffering this daily insult and torture,Zidane played football with all his heart. It was just a matter of time when people noticed his talent and determination.Zidane’s struggle ended.A poor Algerian boy became a star.

In the final of 1998 ,in the world cup Zinedine Zidane played like never before.Pitted against the world beating team of Brazil-he destroyed them with 2 unbelievable goals.France won the world cup and Zidane won the love of his countrymen and all the football fans in the world.

A stunning loss early in 2002,emotionally affected Zinedine. He contemplated retirement and was not to play the world cup of 2006. Six months back however ,he returned. His aim was to restore France’s lost glory by winning them the world cup.

As captain Zizou (as he is affectionately called),stamped his authority in the cup.Once again he destroyed Brazil with all its Ronaldos, ronaldinhos playing the role of playmaker to perfection. He had already crafted a win against the skillful spanish team single handedly doing defence, midfield and attack.

In the semifinal he outplayed portugal to reach the final. Then what happened?

Matarelli ,the italian midfielder.knowing Zidanes background began to play on his mind.First ,he started sledging and held him from behind. Then he called him an algerian muslim terrorist.Zidane tried to ignore it. But then he started talking cheap things about Zinedine’s sister (the one who was forced into prostitution).

No brother can tolerate this tirade against ones own sister. In anger ,Zidane butted him. What followed is history.

Now tell me ,was Zidane wrong? It was an emotional moment for him-his last match. He was charged up to win for his country. And this dirty tactics by the italians spoiled it for him.

I was happy however that he was honoured with the golden ball. And what really moved me was what the French premier spoke. “France is proud of Zinedine Zidane for his enormous and unforgettable contribution to the game and the country.the country showers him with all their love and honour.”

A fitting tribute to one of the Greats of World Football.

“Dear Zizou,we will miss you so very much.”
